Celebrating Our Unique Community

What do we mean by Unique?

What is “unique” about deafness is that it affects an individual’s access to communication. This access can be obtained through any combination of sign language, technology (to include hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive technology, computers), speech reading, and captioning. However, without the support of these various methods of access, communication and language would be greatly impeded. Hearing loss brings together a community of parents and their children with a variety of professionals who work with hearing loss. It is our community of parents, children, deaf educators, audiologists, speech pathologists, counselors, interpreters, captioners, rehabilitative specialists, school administrators, adults who are deaf or hard of hearing and many others that make our community so “unique”. This conference is meant to celebrate the uniqueness of our community, the successes of our community and the unique (sometimes challenging) issues that arise with hearing loss.
About Education of the Deaf Achieving Student Success in a Digital World
Today’s digital age has provided unlimited access to technology and opened a new world of opportunities for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Students are now able to experience the world through technology in a way that they have never been able to in the past. They are able to communicate and socialize through a media that knows no barriers.

As educators and as families of students who are deaf and hard of hearing, we must embrace the limitless opportunities that the digital age presents, allowing students to achieve new heights as they face the future. Join us at the Statewide Conference on Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in 2012 as we explore current research and innovative strategies targeted to foster and support student success in the 21st century.
